2 December 2011

from Annette Karmiloff-Smith

I have two special memories of Jon, personal and professional.  I think it was 2001 or 2002, we were at Attention and Performance in Erice, and Jon, Mark Johnson, Alan Allport, and I rented an apartment together on an island opposite Erice for three or four days after the conference.  I recall wonderfully relaxed evenings drinking, laughing and eating messy seafood with our fingers in the setting sun. He had such a wicked sense of humour. Such a lovely man to be around.  Then I asked Jon to co-supervise a doctoral student with me - his intellectual input was amazing and invaluable; thanks in good part to that, she is now a rising international star at Oxford with a clear "Driver" mark on her science.  He will live on in so many ways....  I've been carrying Jon's special smile at the front of my mind for the past few days and will treasure these memories.
