from Essi Viding

I had read many of Jon’s papers before I ever met him and like everyone else, was in awe of his brilliance as a scientist. During my first years as a UCL lecturer I had to sit in a few committees with Jon, and was always impressed by his ability to get to the heart of the matter, while being warm and diplomatic. He was extremely persuasive, but in a very ‘soft’ manner.

I often found it funny how someone who was so utterly quick and sharp in the meetings, was such a sweet and kind man in person. Jon, to me, was foremost the husband of my dear friend Nilli. My pervasive memory is of Jon wearing cool T-shirts and jeans, hanging around the house, playing guitar with his boys, and cuddling my daughter. I know that he and Nilli were soulmates and it breaks my heart to think of the loss to her and the boys, as well as Jon’s immediate family.
