I was lucky enough to work with Jon a little bit. It was thrilling to talk about science with him, watching him listen to an idea, articulate it more clearly than me, spin it around and then improve it, before he finished with an "am I right?", a smile and that twinkle in his eye. I would just be nodding away throughout.  If he asked a question at a talk it would always be illuminating, and to see him grasp things so quickly and completely was something special in itself. But for all his eminence, he would always make the effort to come over at any social event or meeting and ask about how things were going, when he could have just spent all his time talking to other VIPs. A real pleasure and a great privilege to have worked with him and to have known him.
