1 December 2011

from Patrick Haggard

I have a strong memory of the first staff appraisal that I had with Jon.  One doesn't normally expect being appraised to be a pleasure.  But Jon was able to combine very perceptive scientific feedback with being deeply supportive.  I came out of the meeting feeling enthused and committed.  He was a fantastic manager, and a pleasure to work for.

A few weeks ago, I asked him, as a favour, to comment on a document I was writing, which  had to tick the right political boxes, and be scientifically credible as well.  I knew it was the kind of thing at which he excelled.  In the space of a few hours he returned a set of comments that were "spot on".  He was always very generous with his outstanding intelligence and his time.  We will all miss him terribly.  Thank you for all your help, Jon
