1 December 2011

from Brad Duchaine

Like everyone, I admired Jon for his brilliance and drive, but it will be his generosity I’ll always be grateful for.

Jon hired me as a lecturer at the ICN, and he was there for me at every step. On his own initiative, he wrote a grant before I arrived that provided me with a full-time RA and then he recruited a fantastic PhD student for my lab. Jon provided me with examples of his successful grants (no shortage there!) and surprised me with detailed comments on a draft of my first grant. Jon’s help extended outside of work too; as he said in an email “if you do have any problems in London, it's my job to fix these, so just let me know.” He helped me strategize first for a salary increase and then a promotion. Jon (and Masud Husain) nominated me for a number of early career prizes, and when I actually won one of these, Jon organized an ICN-sponsored party at the pub. Jon saw that Martin Eimer and I should work together and played matchmaker.

He will be deeply missed.
