2 December 2011

from John Pullman

I hadn't seen Jon for over 20 years, but was very upset to hear the news of his death. I was vaguely aware he'd become a very successful scientist, but reading these tributes it's clear he was a leader in his field, and much loved by colleagues around the world. I knew him through his sister when we were all at school in Hull - and later at Oxford. He played the bass in a local band The London Boys - Stax/Motown covers and their own songs in a similar style. You can find one of their songs on Youtube if you look hard enough. Jon was a sharp dresser, one of the few guys able to make white jeans look cool. In fact he was a cool guy all round - very clever, funny and kind. His death is a great tragedy.
